Thank you for the virtual gift! *hugs*

So... *prods* What would you like for Christmas? That's at least halfway reasonable, of course.

In general I don’t have much interest in HP fandom. I don’t like canon and I don’t like most of the fanfiction out there. But I do find that I have a strange interest in the Hermione/Snape pairing. I think that’s because it- in its best, most IC form- can actually be quite an interesting pairing. Look, I admit it- I have a thing for student/teacher relationships when they’re written well. I’m a total fan girl for Numair/Daine and Mana/Mahaado. Written well, this kind of pairing is perfectly tailored to make me squeal in delight.

So, even though I should know better, I every once in a while return to slog through the junk and look for that little gem. Of course I usually just walk away with complaints. There are woobie!Snapes and such in this pairing, yes, but Hermione is the one who’s usually written so terribly out of character as to make me scream. The issues are almost always the same as well.

Fandom Rant- On 'Yami' and Dying

I guess I'm on a roll with the rants? This one is better-written than the last, since it isn't contingent on dialogue comparison. Maybe one day I'll get pissed enough to post it to one of the Yuugiou forums on ff.net...but for now I'll just torture you guys with it ;)

And Guardian's Song, my next rant is on HP fandom. Interested? ;P

Rant of Righteous Fury...for Mana!

I've been watching the dub scenes involving Mana, and honestly, they're painful. They changed her whole character! In the original, she was very devoted to Mahaado and spent most of her time thinking and talking about him. She looked up to him and wanted to always be there with him, and so was obviously heart-broken when he died. In the dub? She's so far spent most of her time talking about Atemu, and the scene after Mahaado's death...well, it's truly awful.

Firstly, here's the original:

New story...

Well, I have a new short series I'm working on which I've started posting. I'm really nervous about it, though. You see, it basically explores Malik and Bakura's alliance within canon, so the dialogue is the same as in the series. I think it's kind of interesting to explore what might have been going through their heads, but at the same time I worry that it's...not really unique to write a story which pretty much follows canon?

It's not that it's easy- with all of the translating involved, it takes much longer than it would to write an original scene of corresponding length. But still, I can't get rid of this nagging feeling.

Obviously this is not my property. Yuugiou belongs to Takahashi Kazuki and respective publishers, including Shueisha, Studio Gallop, Nihon Ad Systems, 4Kids, and others.

To finish up today's unexpected post-spam, I noticed that there's a new Malik's Evil Council video up. A lot of references I'm not familiar with at the beginning, but I was very amused by the 'evil' Dan Green, the Dartz scene, and of course the gay Malik issue being brought up again. And Malik/Bakura interaction, which is pretty much guarnateed to win me over like the total Thiefshippper that I am.

I don't think anyone on my f-list besides Subieko watches the series, but hey, at least the two of us can be geeky about it together ^^;

Blargh, sleep problems...

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Cai Wenji 4
Currently my life is sucking again due to sleep problems. It's just really escalated and it's so effing aggravating. I tend to only force myself into bed in the morning- 7 AM at the latest, 5 AM at the earliest- and then wake up at about 5 PM. I hate this. It wastes my day, prevents me from eating enough, gets me yelled at a lot, makes me only get up when I hear my tutors ringing the doorbell and thus be late for class, and is slowing my writing down to a crawling pace.

(The last, naturally, is pissing me off the most.)

I keep trying different things to improve, and nothing helps. When I DO get to bed, I sleep fine, but I get to bed very late and have yet to be able to force myself into bed earlier. I have a new old-fashioned alarm clock which is quite loud, but if I'm too deeply asleep I don't hear it, just like the electrical ones. So thus I don't get up earlier either to make me sleepier earlier, and the pattern continues.

Today is an example of something which has been recently happening to me as well. I accidentally stayed up all night, and then realized it was 7 AM. Now, I take over an hour showering. I'd just sleep all day if I started a shower at that point (and no bed without a shower first for me). So I'm going to stay up today with very little sleep. I'll have to nap in my chair (I'm already feeling tired and disoriented). By late evening, a decent bedtime, guess what? I'm going to be too tired to even muster the energy to shower, and then I'll do some more chair-napping until something ridiculous like 3 AM, which, when showering is over, will put me in bed at maybe 5 AM, not that dissimilar to my regular habits. Thus no improvement.

Sure, I'll TRY to shower at something sensible like 9 or 10 PM, but the chances of it happening are sadly low.

Again, it's messing with my writing! If not for this I could be through with a whole arc and have at least one new one-shot posted by now! I do not like it, it's making me miserable!

I know what might help, though I have no idea how to do it. Maybe a really fucking loud mp3 playing alarm clock which doesn't stop playing? Something like Brooklyn Rage would be great. Fun song, but I hate having it stuck in my head. I could never daydream and then sleep with it going full-blast nearby. But yeah, no idea how to rig that up, and my parents are too annoyed with me to do anything constructive (not that they ever did much besides provide the alarm clock which I do like). Mostly they just give useless lectures, glare, and scream for me at 5 or 6 PM when I've either recently woken up or am very upset to know that dinner has just been made and I've only just woken up.

'Underage' Characters and Sex

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 4:14 AM
Cai Wenji 4

This is an issue which has been nagging at me for a while.I know that a lot of sites will remove fanfiction stories and artwork which depict underage characters involved in sex. When it comes to prepubescent children, I understand, because...duh, pedophilia. But...

When dealing with a fanfiction set in, say, ancient Egypt, where the common marriagable age was twelve for girls and fifteen for boys, what does the site's decision become then? And the age of consent varies greatly in different states and countries (I'm not sure of the age, but I'm pretty sure it's a good bit lower in Japan than in the different US states), so how does a website deal with that issue?

So of course for an example...Atemu is confirmed in the anime as being fifteen, which is marriagable age in his time period, and being royalty those rules were fuzzier anyway (loads of Pharaohs were married at younger ages). If Atemu gets married in your fanfic, he's going to have sex. Or let's say someone's writing Atemu/Bakura in ancient times- Bakura is quite a few years older than him, likely in his early twenties. In my ancient stories Atemu is fifteen and Aishisu twenty-two. I don't know if in GfaT they'll have time for sex or not, but if they do then, yes, they'll have sex. If I ever did that ridiculous full series AU, they'd get married and have sex and possibly have a kid because they hate me...

Would a website like, say, ff.net feel the need to remove a story because of such an age difference, or would they not care since both are adults by the standards of their society? I've yet to hear about any stories removed for that issue, and hey, I've seen plenty of stories where Atemu has sex. But I'm wondering. Some authors do feel the need to heavily emphasize that the characters having sex are all legally adults...in the states the authors live in. Is that really an issue?

Describing Games...

Well, I'm starting to get a little bit more done on the first arc...I've started a scene/chapter (not sure yet) from Ryou's viewpoint. He doesn't have a huge part in the story simply because most of it takes place in ancient times, but I do like what part he does have. I think this is going to cover a conversation between him and Malik, and then him and Yuugi.

Writing Ryou and Malik is...interesting. It's kind of messy, in that Malik keeps freaking reminding him, 'Oh yes, it was my idea to cut your arm up', very nonchalantly, and so Ryou is a bit freaked, I think. But then Malik helps Ryou inadvertently, pretty much by making a very clear distinction between Ryou and Bakura, which Ryou doesn't get a lot from others.

I'm looking forward to the Jounouchi-Rishid scene. I think they're going to duel, which is in one way cool but in another way kind of nerve-wracking, because I don't understand Duel Monsters all that well. Yes, and I'm writing Yuugiou DM fanfic. Go figure. But hey, at least I'm willing to try, while a lot of fandom barely ever touches on the different games. I'm...pretty much going to have to skim over the actual moves. Besides, it would probably be boring in print anyway- even on the show the duels sometimes get overly long.

I'll look into trying a style which Hikaru no Go used- basically skimming over the moves except for a big one here and there. Hey, given the length of Go games I think it was necessary for them ^^; I have a short scene from a yuri drabble series (not yet posted), which tries that technique out...I hope it worked okay, but I'm not sure. Anyone willing to give an opinion?

I think I'd be better at writing Monster World...which is good because that's the game which features in this story more XD I might be able to describe Capmon if I go over its chapters again...not that I need it for this story, but if I ever do any Mokuba viewpoint that would be good to be familiar with.

Anime Pricing Rant

I slept most of the day today, perhaps because I felt like crap....seriously, I feel so crappy right now that maybe I am coming down with something.

Cai Wenji 4
A few random pieces, a music video, and a hilariousrecap of the manga have been uploaded to LittleKuriboh's account.

Hmm, let me try something out...

Malik and Bakura were covertly hitting on each other in episodes 68 and 69. NOW THAT I HAVE SAID IT, IT MUST BE CANON.

*waits for confirming statement from Takahashi-sensei or the anime writers*

I made total XD faces over the 'radioactive hands'. It's so true! How did I not notice that while reading?

'So I guess Yuugi's always wanted to have the powers of hell at his fingertips. OUR PROTAGONIST, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.' *starts sporfling massively*

'Yuugi jumps about 50 feet in the air to avoid the knife. Wait, what?' Another thing I never noticed, but yes, it is so illogical! I know Atemu had military training (to some extent anyway, and he was great at horse-riding), but he's kind of stuck in Yuugi's body right now!

*still waiting for confirming statement* While we're at it, why not request one on the Mana/Mahaado subtext? XD

Falconry, snakebites and magic...

I'm sure you are all terribly surprised to hear that I am researching this for a story ;)

Cai Wenji 4

From writing Atemu, that is. And so much for that conviction- last night while showering I got a plot bunny, and this evening I started writing it... It's a one-shot exploring how Atemu came to the decision to use his name as the seal on Zorc in ancient times. It's almost complete right now, so I expect to finish it up at 2k before bed.

Pharaoh? After this you're taking a break and letting some other characters take the spotlight, okay? I've got Mana/Mahaado back-story to write, and as usual my ridiculous epic which refuses to be completed and is worse off length-wise due to the re-write.

I'm also too hungry to figure out if that is a run-on sentence or not.

I have completed another scene, so yay! Now I only have three more scenes to write and a teensy bit of editing. It shouldn't take TOO long, given that each scene is only 500-1000 words.

Also, I have the coolest idea for a scene between Jounouchi and Rishid in the first arc of GfaT. It is cool, I tell you! No, really, Jounouchi and Rishid were just amazing during their duel in Battle City, and you can tell that Jounouchi viewed him as a friend afterwards. It's a shame that no one seems to ever consider this in their writing, but, you know, dearth of Rishid is a fault of the fandom. It's a terrible shame, because he's a really amazing character.

And I have to wonder if Rishid's seiyuu left after Battle City or something, because he doesn't speak once in the fifth season. It's just....whyyy?

After this I may want to take a break from writing Atemu's viewpoint *glares at him* I'll still write him soon, since he speaks with Ishizu in at least one scene in the first arc...but that's from her viewpoint. And I need a break, thank you very much, Pharaoh. I love writing him, I love him to bits (along with pretty much every other character), but I need a break.

And I have a headache now. Damn. But I will still write!

Edit: Actually, I feel kind of naseus. But I will not let it stop me...nn....

Stereo Recorder Woes...

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 4:20 PM
Cai Wenji 4
I am in a slightly angsty mood over this. You see, on my old computer which now sucks and has no internet connection, I had a music program called Creative Mediasource. Basically just for organizing and playing music, but with one lovely extra- it included a recorder which could be used to record straight off the computer's stereo. Rather than using a mic, you'd just hit record and it would record whatever was playing on the computer. Very good quality, too, once you tinkered with the settings (which was quite easy).

I mostly used it to record things like Indian music, since a lot of the classic Indian music I listen to online isn't available for sale anymore, such as the veena player Gayathri E.

Now, on my new computer I have Creative Mediasource still, since I much prefer it to programs like Windows Mediaplayer and Itunes. But its recorder refuses for some reason to do stereo recording- I don't even have the option of choosing which source it records from. All it will do is give me a really crappy quality recording of whatever song is selected on my playlist in the program. I tried to clear the playlist and see if it would record other sounds that way...not so. I also can't alter the recording quality, so what I get is pure shit anyway.

This is incredibly aggravating, and I desperately miss the old version from my old computer.

And I'm finding another thing I really want a recorder for, too DX When writing fanfic I base the characters' dialogue right off their original Japanese voices- tone and speech patterns translated as best I can into English. I really need to have a clear view in my head of what they sound like, and it would help so much if I had short recordings of their dialogue. Just, say, 30 seconds or so each even. As it is I keep having multiple videos open on Youtube for reference and they get laggy after a while. Plus it's very aggravating a way to work.

So I've been poking around for a different recorder, but I can't seem to find any which record off the stereo- they're all for mics and headsets. *screams in frustration*

Do any of you know of a program which might fit my needs? (preferably a free one)

Blood Protection Essay- Rough Draft

This is a rough draft (and I mean rough) of an essay I'm working on concerning the magic system in Harry Potter, specifically the blood protection Harry supposedly receives from his mother's sacrifice. I've tried to keep my information accurate, but I may have made some mistakes, as I have yet to go through the books for quotes. So please tell me if you think something seems off.
